Stewart Middlemas was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and attended Newcastle College of Art and Design where he studied Photolithography.  He then worked in the UK and South Africa as a Lithographic Planner, before moving to St Ives in 1986.
After a further spell in the printing trade, Stewart decided on a career change and spent eight years fishing for mackerel out of St Ives.  Inspired by the pretty seaside villages of West Cornwall and by his Northumberland heritage, he began painting professionally. His is work reflects his affinity with boats and the sea.
 
Having relocated to Northumberland, Stewart continues to enjoy exploring coastal landscapes, sketching and painting.
